Whenever you look in the Bible, worship seems to be central to man's experience of God. In the Old Testament when men of God gathered together praise was the common reaction. Some of the Levites were commissioned as singers while others played instruments in the temple. The Psalms in particular are the Bible's hymnbook. Although the tunes are lost, Hebrew scholars can tell even today what key each song was sung in. In the same way, the Christian Church has made music to praise the God of salvation.

In the New Testament, Paul and Silas were in prison singing and praising God. Paul, in Ephesians, commands us to "speak to one another with Psalms and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God." The Colossian epistle also encourages us today to sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in our hearts to God.

Today's charismatic church gives much freer expression to the worship of God than perhaps formally. Although it was said of the Venerable Bebe of Jarrow in the fifth century that he would often raise his hands during public worship and say aloud "Hallelujah". So we have a mixture of hymns and new songs of worship and we give full expression of our love for the Lord in this way.

We have seen the results of God begin to move in our midst as we praise Him, and people have testified to being either physically healed, or had personal problems healed, while others have been converted while the presence of God has lingered over the worship.

To help in our worship at Elim Christian Centre we have a lead worshiper, who leads our worship team. The team practice regularly as a group, and our lead worshiper would be pleased to speak to anyone who feels that they would like to be part of the team. Although some talent for playing is required, it is also important to be flowing in the blessing of God, as the personal lifestyle of the individual does have an effect on the overall performance of the music.
